What roles can right wingers play in Football Manager 23?
The Right Wing is a versatile position that can strongly determine the shape of your attack. From the traditional Winger role to the Inside Forward that looks to score, the space exploiting Raumdeuter, and everything in between, there are plenty of options.
We will start with the Winger and Inverted Winger roles, which are very similar. The Winger aims to stay wide, beat his man and get crosses into the box, while on the attack duty they will aim to get closer to the by-line and take up more advanced positions on the wing.
The Inverted Winger is fairly similar, although they will look to pick the ball up and drive inside, allowing a wing-back to overlap or for the Inverted Winger to spot passes or crosses inside. On attack duty, they will look to be more aggressive attacking the defensive line, rather than look to run across it.
The Advanced Playmaker will act as your team’s primary creative fulcrum in the final third. Normally, they will be the only midfielder in your team with a designated ‘playmaker’ role. They look to receive in pockets of space between the lines, using technical and passing quality to break down the defence. On attack duty, they will dribble at defenders more often to mess with their shape.
The Trequartista role is fairly similar to the Advanced Playmaker, although they commit themselves very heavily to the offensive side of the game, and will leave a lot of the defensive duty to others out of possession. So while he doesn’t get much defensive work done, they are player that your attacking unit revolves around.
As noted in the game, the Raumdeuter is literally the German word for ‘space investigator’. It’s self-explanatory, but basically, they are like a wide Trequartista that will roam and look for pockets to find the ball, especially in the penalty area. They will need to be sorted by your other players out of possession. However, they are different to the Trequartista in that they like to get on the end of play, not start it
The Wide Target Forward, a.k.a. the Mario Mandžukić at Juventus role, is another pretty self-explanatory one. They’ll park themselves out wide on a smaller full-back and become an outlet for your defence to play out to, before controlling the ball and moving it on to the team’s other attacking players.
Lastly, there is the ultra-attacking, and many players’ long-time favourite role in Football Manager, the Inside Forward. The Inside Forward is not hugely dissimilar to the Inverted Winger, but they will cross much less and instead look to be really aggressive with inside runs with and without the ball.
While the Inverted Winger likes to pick up the ball out wide, the Inside Forward is happy to make runs to pick the ball up in the half-space. On the Support duty, they will look to play through balls from deep and take long shots, while on Attack duty they will be more aggressive in attacking the box.

What attributes are important for right wingers in Football manager 23?
There are three main categories of Right Winger in FM23: playmaking roles, attacking roles, and winger roles.
Let’s start with the playmaking roles: Trequartista and Advanced Playmaker. At a base level, these roles require your player to have good dribbling, first touch, passing, technique, vision and decision-making, flair, composure and anticipation attributes. The Trequartista will require the same attributes, but also some acceleration and finishing for those late runs into the penalty area.
The winger roles, Winger and Inverted Winger are also quite similar. The Winger role requires acceleration, stamina, pace, and agility as baseline physical attributes, while crossing, dribbling, work rate, passing technique, first touch and off the ball movement are also crucial. Some flair will also be required if you are looking to play them on an Attack duty. The Inverted Winger requires all these things, but also decent long shots, composure, vision and decision-making for when they cut inside and attack central spaces.
Lastly, there are the attacking roles: Raumdeuter, Wide Target Forward and Inside Forward. However, they are all a little bit different. For example, the Wide Target Forward will require that your player firstly be tall enough, but also have good jumping reach, balance, stamina and strength as physical attributes to fulfil their role. Heading is another obvious prerequisite, but they’ll also need other more standard winger attributes like crossing, first touch, off the ball movement, work rate, etc.
The Inside Forward is not too dissimilar to the Inverted Winger, but with their added increase on attacking the penalty area, they trade the Inverted Winger’s need to be able to cross for finishing.
Lastly, there’s the Raumdeuter. The headline key attributes mental ones: anticipation, concentration, off the ball movement, work rate, decision-making and composure. They’ll need these to be able to follow the play and execute runs and actions with perfect timing to be most effective. Finishing, first touch, technique, work rate, acceleration, stamina and balance are also important.

Noni Madueke
- Position: RW
- Club: PSV Eindhoven (NED)
- Country: England
While his progression in real life continues to suffer due to ongoing injury struggles, Noni Madueke is a surefire option in FM23 (as he was in FM22) that can blossom into a Champions League level starter.
His best role is coming inside off the right either as an inverted winger or inside forward. His strong dribbling and finishing stats mean he is suitable to either, while he also has the acceleration and pace to be a good outlet as a traditional winger on the left if you need some flexibility. Madueke truly looks like one of the most dominant right wingers in the game, with potential to grow massively.
As such, PSV demand a hefty sum for him, which you should expect to be nine-figures. Our tests suggest that around €110 million is enough.
Matías Soulé
- Positions: RW
- Club: Juventus (ITA)
- Country: Argentina
Matías Soulé progressed strongly in 2021/22 as a member of Juventus’ under-23 team in Serie C, as well as in the UEFA Youth League, where Juve reached the semi-final. He also made his first forays into the senior team, as well as being given opportunities to join the senior Argentina squad to train and gain experience in that environment.
And as such, his potential in FM23 has taken a big step up, reflecting the potential he has to step up and play at a Champions League level. Soulé is not a super quick player, but he is a very talented creator and dribbler that looks to cut in off the right in a similar vein to former Juve star Paulo Dybala.
Soulé looks like a perfect loan candidate for a second division team as he looks for game time before breaking into the Juventus first-team. If you can’t get a buy-out clause in his loan, still look to sign him in 2023 as his contract expires in 2024.
Nico Williams
- Positions: RW, LW
- Club: Athletic Club (ESP)
- Country: Spain
Nico Williams is exploding in 2022/23, with excellent form for Athletic Club translating into his first international caps for Spain in September.
He was already a decent player in FM22, but he has taken a big step up in the latest instalment to reflect the fact that at 20 he is already a full Spanish international. He is a speedy, hard-working winger that likes to come in from the right flank and attack the box. He has pretty good finishing as well, meaning he brings a strong penalty box threat. He has a wonderfully rounded skillset though that will only grow further as you develop him.
Athletic Club are notorious for only letting their players go at their release clause price, which is often inflated. In saying that, you could do worse things with €87 million than sign the Spanish international.

Rayan Cherki
- Positions: RW, AM, LW
- Club: Olympique Lyonnais (FRA)
- Country: France
As the next jewel in the crown of the Lyon academy, we have been patiently waiting for Rayan Cherki to burst onto the scene for a while now. But he is still only 19, and with plenty of room to develop physically to match the level of his technical skill, Cherki is a must-watch player to track.
In FM23, he is exactly what you would expect; a highly talented technician who is very strong on both feet, with decent speed. Outside of that, there’s not a huge amount to his game, but with huge potential it is something that can still be honed if you put the time and effort into him.
As a project player, €18 million is a pretty substantial fee, but if you have the time and resources, he is a player you should definitely look at. You might be able to get an even better value deal for him if you play the contract game, as his deal with OL expires in 2024 – if he plays less than 28 league games that season.
Yéremy Pino
- Positions: RW, LW
- Club: Villarreal (ESP)
- Country: Spain
There were huge links between Yéremy Pino and the Premier League in the summer of 2022, but in the end the Spanish winger remained at Villarreal, where he is quickly developing into a very complete player – a skilled, but determined winger.
This isn’t perfectly reflected in FM23. In game, he is more of a small, technical winger who is strong on both feet, but is quite weak on the defensive side of the game, both in terms of tackling and work rate. However, he is a massive attacking talent in the game that can turn into a great Champions League-level player.
Pino is so good, but that also means that Villarreal want to be adequately compensated for selling him. So they essentially won’t accept a penny less than his €80 million release clause. That being said, if you can afford it, he’s worth it.
Ângelo Gabriel
- Positions: RW
- Club: Santos (BRA)
- Country: Brazil
Ângelo might be Santos’ biggest phenomenon since Neymar. Making his debut as a 15-year-old in 2020, he quickly became a squad player and found himself on the fringes of the first team, moving into a more regular role as a 17-year-old in 2022.
The Brazilian is a silky dribbler with good acceleration and dribbling in FM23. He is quite agile too, with decent passing and vision to boot. His biggest let down as a left-footed right winger is his finishing and long shots.
Ângelo has played more than 50 matches at senior level for Santos already, before his 18th birthday – an astonishing number. You won’t be able to sign him for a European club until he turns 18 in December 2022, so you should eye him up as a January reinforcement for a price around €25 million.
Lionel Messi is the best right winger in FM23, followed up closely by the likes of Mohamed Salah.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka is one of the best young right wingers in FM23.
