It is obviously one of the stranger aspects of Football Manager 2022 that the manager is the person that hires the director of football, and not vice versa. Your role in FM22 is essentially as both the manager and director of football of your club.
Alas, your director of football can help you speedrun the game, by helping you with the following: Initial contract negotiations and then negotiating contract renewals, recruitment for the first team and/or reserve/youth team, arranging loans, managing scouts and assignments, attending press conferences, and so on.
Essentially, their role can be just about as big or small as you want. The game gives you a lot of flexibility to play as you would like: DoFs can be your transfer market guru spotting young talent, or they can simply be a shortcut to renewing staff contracts. Conversely, you can put your director of football in charge of finding good deals on youngsters and wonderkids, and either give yourself (or them) the final say on whether the deal is made.

NEWGEN DIRECTORS OF FOOTBALL
There are not many great directors of football that are free agents in FM22. But the game almost always loads up with lots of really good regen options that have the ability to be great options for top clubs.
A lot of them will have 18+ ratings in the key attributes: negotiating. judging player ability and judging player potential. These will generally set you back somewhere in the vicinity of €30,000 p/w, but are worth every penny if you intend to make full utilisation of your DoF. And above all, you will not need to pay Sevilla the €6 million compensation fee they want for Monchi.

The man, the myth, the legend. Luís Campos is a free agent at the start of your save after a couple of legendary stints at AS Monaco and then Lille. Better known as the man that brought Kylian Mbappe to Monaco, Campos surprisingly has just a 3 star reputation, meaning that he is quite easily attainable for anyone that is able to stump up €20,000 p/w for his wages. His strong DoF attributes are underpinned by world knowledge in some key countries in Europe and South America.

His limited world knowledge is also not ideal, but at his price, he is still a fantastic option.

Current Lazio director of football, Igli Tare is definitely a Rolls Royce option with a whopping salary. However, he will cost you far less in compensation than other comparative options, with a €1.8 million fee required to extract him from his Lazio contract which expires in June 2022. Alongside good DoF attributes, his fantastic mental attributes make him a superb option to take team talks as well as handling press conferences. Full knowledge of Germany and Italy are a good bonus.

Like Igli Tare, a good set of mental attributes to accompany his scouting attributes makes him a good option for handling team talks and press conferences.

He is a great entry level option with an affordable wage with a strong well-rounded mental and knowledge attribute set. He is truly one of the best staff members in the game in terms of being able to fulfil a variety of roles for a team at Champions League level.
WHAT DOES A DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL DO IN FOOTBALL MANAGER 2022?
The director of football can fulfil a range of roles. Some of these are interchangeable with other staff members, including your technical director, assistant manager, chief scout, so will depend on each one’s individual attributes. In saying that, a good DoF can handle signings, contracts, loans, scouting assignments, press conferences, and more.
WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES FOR A DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL IN FOOTBALL MANAGER 2022?
This will depend on what you want them to do. If you want them to take press conferences, mental attributes such as people management will be important. If your DoF is signing players, then their negotiating skills, and judging player current ability and judging player potential attributes will be crucial. Some DoFs will also have tendencies, such as Manchester City’s Txiki Begiristan, who has a tendency to ‘sign many youth players’ and ‘sign a lot of young players to turn a profit on them’.
HOW DO I DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITIES TO A DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL IN FOOTBALL MANAGER 2022?
In the staff section, under the responsibilities tab, you will be able to delegate tasks to your director of football. Be mindful of what tasks you do allocate to them and whether they are the best person for the job, or whether the task would be better suited to another staff member.
WHAT RESPONSIBILITIES SHOULD I DELEGATE TO MY DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL IN FOOTBALL MANAGER 2022?
This all depends on how much control you want to have over every aspect of the club. For some people that want to sign players, renew every contract, take press conferences, and manage all their scouts individually, there might be little use for a director of football. Conversely, if you want to focus on other things, a director of football could be extremely useful to you.
Luís Campos is the main one. The former AS Monaco and LOSC Lille supremo is available to pick up on a free at teh start of the game. Other good options include Alexander Rosen and Stuart Webber.
