THE IMPORTANCE OF ASSISTANT MANAGERS IN FM22
Your assistant manager in Football Manager 2022 is your right-hand man. You can give him as much, or as little responsibility as you want, making him either a crucial, or simply a fairly important member of your staff. There are around 100 tasks that can be delegated in FM22, from team talks and press conferences, to handling team selection and training, to handling signings, sales and loans.
And, of course, you want them to be able to be useful on the training ground as well, meaning that your assistant manager will need to be useful as a goalkeeping, defending, attacking, possession, or fitness coach. Lastly, good judging player ability and judging player potential attributes are essential for them to evaluate players within your club. (Yes, we are asking for a lot here).

WOLFGANG ROLFF
CURRENT JOB
LAVAL UNITED
BADGES
CONTINENTAL PRO
EXPECTED WAGES
€650 p/w
REPUTATION
The ultimate low cost acquisition is available as long as you have the UAE as an active nation. Wolfgang Rolff is not the best assistant manager he is, but he is certainly in the conversation for being the best value. At €650 p/w (plus a €24,000 compensation fee), he has a pretty well rounded collection of attributes that will allow you to effectively deploy him in a number of roles.
SIDNEI LOBO
CURRENT JOB
AL-NASSR
BADGES
CONTINENTAL PRO
EXPECTED WAGES
€5,000 p/w
REPUTATION
After a long journeyman career that has seen him move around from the Brazilian league to the national team, and then to China, Sidnei Lobo is now an assistant manager at Al-Nassr. With superb judging player ability and judging player potential attributes, he is a good fit from that aspect, although his training attributes are not fantastic. However, at his wage, you can’t expect your assistant manager to have everything: he is a good option.
LES REED
CURRENT JOB
WREXHAM AFC
BADGES
CONTINENTAL PRO
EXPECTED WAGES
€4,000 p/w
REPUTATION
He is currently a technical director with Ryan Reynolds’ and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham, but with a bit of extra cash thrown in, you can convince Les Reed to come across and be your assistant manager. Reed is a really good option in this role, only lacking people management skills. Conversely, he has great judging player ability and judging player potential attributes, as well as reasonably strong qualities as an attacking coach.
RAINER WIDMAYER
CURRENT JOB
UNEMPLOYED
BADGES
CONTINENTAL PRO
EXPECTED WAGES
€8,500 p/w
REPUTATION
Rainer Widmayer is a good entry level assistant manager, with a 2 star reputation meaning he should be fairly attainable. In saying that, he is a bit on the expensive side, and his ability to be a good contributor to training sessions is limited. But he is a very good option if you are looking to use your assistmant manager to take team talks, press conferences, and so on.
GUILLERMO AMOR
CURRENT JOB
UNEMPLOYED
BADGES
CONTINENTAL PRO
EXPECTED WAGES
€9,500 p/w
REPUTATION
He is a legend at Barcelona for his exploits as a player, but he is much less known for his exploits as a coach. But in 2015, Amor won an A-League title with Adelaide United in a short stint in Australia. He then returned to Barcelona, keeping himself busy with various backroom roles before leaving the club in 2021.
Amor has a superbly well-rounded set of attributes and is available at a fairly affordable wage. He would also fit your club as a head of youth development, head performance analyst, technical director, director of football, youth manager, scout, etc.
JON ASPIAZU
CURRENT JOB
UNEMPLOYED
BADGES
CONTINENTAL PRO
EXPECTED WAGES
€9,000 p/w
REPUTATION
A career that has seen Jon Aspiazu become an assistant at a range of important clubs: Athletic Club, Olympiacos, Valencia, Barcelona, and now… potentially your club. Aspiazu is a strong all-rounder that would thrive as a possession coach. He also has strong mental attributes and decent enough judging player ability and judging player potential attribute attributes.
NOTABLE OTHERS
There are some very high quality assistant managers already at established clubs on astronomical wages – we’ve decided to exclude them from this shortlist to focus on more attainable targets. There are also some that have just signed new contracts and will not leave their current roles, or are unemployed with wage demands in excess of €10,000 p/w.
