How do I develop goalkeepers in FIFA 23 Career mode?
There are a few key methods to develop goalkeepers in FIFA 23. Firstly, they need to play senior minutes and get good match ratings in matches. Obviously, this needs to be balanced with your need to win games but getting them on the field as much as possible is vital.
If you can’t give them minutes, then consider sending them on loan. However, when loaning players, ensure that you are sending them to a club where they will play senior minutes, or you risk further stunting their growth.
Next, focus on doing well in training drills and earning good ratings. Generally, you should be able to play through each drill a few times, do them well, and then you should be able to subsequently simulate the sessions and earn a similar grade. However, if your grades start to fall, you should take control of your drills again to boost your ratings back up.
Lastly, and very importantly, is your player development plan. Development plans determine what kind of skillset you want your player to develop for their role in your team.
For goalkeepers, there are three development paths to choose from:
Balanced – The all-round option that will see your goalkeepers develop all their attributes with no real particular focus.
Goalkeeper – The Goalkeeper development plan will focus on more traditional goalkeeping fundamentals, where most attention is given to diving and reflexes.
Sweeper Keeper – A sweeper ‘keeper will play the more modern goalkeeping role, with emphasis on their ability to progress the ball. Their focus will be on weak foot (to facilitate playing out from the back more comfortably), kicking, positioning, and handling.

OUR LISTS OF THE BEST YOUNG TALENTS
We’ve split this section into three goalkeepers that can start for your teams straight away, and three goalkeepers that are good options for the future:
Gianluigi Donnarumma
- Club: Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)
- Country: Italy
Gianluigi Donnarumma is one of the most recognisable goalkeepers in the world. He’s been around for what feels like an age already, breaking through at AC Milan initially before making a big move to Paris Saint-Germain.
His status is reflected in FIFA 23. He’s one of the best goalkeepers full stop, let alone the best aged 23 or under. He’s reserved for the elite of the elite.
- Overall: 88
- Potential: 92
Alban Lafont
- Club: FC Nantes (FRA)
- Country: France
Like Donnarumma, Alban Lafont is another young goalkeeper that seems like he’s been around for ages. He initially broke through at Toulouse before moving to Fiorentina in Serie A, where he struggled to settle. He’s since found a home at FC Nantes back in Ligue 1.
He could play for most teams already in the top-five leagues on your FIFA Career Mode save, and he also has the potential to develop into one of the best.
- Overall: 80
- Potential: 85
Diogo Costa
- Club: FC Porto (POR)
- Country: Portugal
If you’re a follower of youth international football, you’ll know plenty about Diogo Costa. He racked up a remarkable 67 caps for Portugal at underage level before breaking into the senior squad.
He became the starting goalkeeper at FC Porto last season too. In FIFA 23, Costa is rated as one of the best young goalkeepers on Career Mode. He’s a strong option if you’re looking for a long-term shot-stopper.
- Overall: 79
- Potential: 86
OUR LISTS OF THE BEST YOUNG TALENTS
Gavin Bazunu
- Club: Southampton (ENG)
- Country: Republic of Ireland
Gavin Bazunu is young for a top-level goalkeeper, but the Republic of Ireland international has been playing first-team football since the age of sixteen. Manchester City plucked him away from Shamrock Rovers before sending him out on a few development loans to EFL clubs.
One of many young summer sigings at Southampton, Bazunu will be difficult to sign straight away but is another good long-term option if you’re looking for a goalkeeper. His overall is perhaps a little low to start the game, too, given he starts every week in the Premier League.
- Overall: 70
- Potential: 85
Kevin Mier
- Club: Atlético Nacional (COL)
- Country: Colombia
Kevin Mier has been a starter at Atlético Nacional, one of South America’s biggest clubs for a couple of seasons now. Tall and lanky, he is very much a traditional goalkeeper that has an international future.
He represents one of the better value GK options in FIFA 23’s Career Mode; the fact that he plays in Colombia makes him more attainable than most. He could play at a solid level in Europe straight away.
- Overall: 72
- Potential: 84
Maarten Vandevoordt
- Club: KRC Genk (BEL)
- Country: Belgium
KRC Genk have form for producing elite-level goalkeepers. Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois is a product of their academy before he was signed at a young age by Chelsea. Maarten Vandevoordt is the next off their production line.
He will join RB Leipzig in 2024 in real life. We’re unsure whether that future transfer will be present in FIFA 23. If it isn’t, Vandevoordt is another good option for those looking for a long-term goalkeeper.
- Overall: 70
- Potential: 84
Thibaut Courtois, Manuel Neuer, Alisson, Ederson and Jan Oblak are the highest rated goalkeepers in FIFA 23 Career Mode.
Unsurprisingly, it’s Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has a whopping 88 overall to start the game, plus the potential to reach 92.
