Who is Adama Bojang?

A star for Gambia at the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2023 U-20 World Cup, Adama Bojang might soon become a star of European football too.

The Steve Biko striker is wanted by a myriad of clubs across the continent after his brilliant year of youth tournament football, and Premier League sides are being credited with much of that interest – namely Manchester United and Newcastle United, according to the Guardian.

Bojang was the lead figure in Gambia’s second appearance at the U-20 World Cup, where they beat France to top their group and reach the Round of 16, losing 1-0 to the eventual winners Uruguay.

This came after the teenager had scored four times in the Under-20 AFCON to take Gambia all the way to the final, where they were beaten by Senegal.

Adama Bojang's style of play

An player to compare Bojang with is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. The Gambian has a similar athletic profile to the extraordinary Nigerian in many ways. He possesses that same rangy athleticism, despite not being quite as tall. He runs with long strides, he’s incredibly agile, lightning quick, and has a proper leap.

Bojang is a great off ball-runner in transition, one that hits the channels hard, showing great endurance to continue doing it for 90 minutes. This was particularly striking at this summer’s U-20 World Cup, where he continued to run himself into the ground as other players in his age group cramped all over the field.

This kind of athletic profile is highly desirable for European clubs looking to invest in a young striker, and underpins the massive amount of interest in him from across the continent.

Intriguingly, Bojang potentially looks even more dynamic than Osimhen in possession. While he doesn’t quite show the same penalty box presence as the Nigerian, he shows more promise in combining with his team-mates, creating his own shots off the dribble, and retaining possession with his technique, rather than pure size and strength. This presents the possibility to ease himself into European football playing off another striker, or off the right wing cutting inside onto his left foot.

The latter might be the best option. Bojang’s ball-striking on his left foot looks clean, making him a real threat to score from just outside the box. He is comfortable passing and shooting on both feet though, adding another piece to his extremely well-rounded skillset.

Adama Bojang's highlights

Adama Bojang is an exciting striker from both a physical and technical standpoint. With speed and athleticism, compared with his ability to play off both feet and combine with team-mates in midfield, his potential is enormous.

Adama Bojang needs to keep adding to his game. To become a dominant number nine at a European level, he must add more penalty box presence to his game. He already has an enormous leap, but if he can develop more strength as he grows, he has the potential to be real handful for senior defenders in the mould of a Victor Osimhen.
